Frances "Fran" Nicolozakes

A woman of eminence for many years in the well-being of the community’s children has died. (Fran) Nicolozakes passed away Sunday morning (May 20, 2018) at her Cambridge home. She was 87 years old. The legacy of Mrs. Nicolozakes touches many aspects of community life, but none more than her faithful benevolence toward the younger members of society who are in need. Prominent Cambridge physician and surgeon Dr. Michael Sarap said, “Fran was the absolute epitome of class and grace. Her passing is a huge loss for our entire community.” In the early 1970s, Mrs. Nicolozakes was one of the founding members of Women Interested in Children (WIC), an organization whose purpose is to provide support for children in the care of the Guernsey County Children Services. In 1978, she was honored as WIC of the Year. For many years, she served as a member of several other local organizations, which include the Children Services Board—an agency she co-founded with the late Thelma Rogovin, the late Molly Anker and the late Carabel Nicholson; the board of the Haven of Hope—a shelter for women in unhealthy domestic situations; the Guernsey County Board of Health; and the board of Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Guernsey County. In addition, she was instrumental in establishment of the local Alternative School. At one time she was named to a state-level commission on youth justice. Mrs. Nicolozakes was the daughter of the late Basil Stathakis and Keriaki (Kiki) Daskalakis Stathakis, both of Crete, Greece. She is a graduate of Pershing Hill High School in Detroit, Michigan, and attended some college and school for beauticians. She and her husband, the late Stanley Nicolozakes, were married on January 16, 1955 at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox church in Detroit, Michigan where she had taught Sunday school. Shortly after, the couple re-located to Ohio, first residing in Pleasant City, and later Cambridge. She was a current member of the Church of the Life Giving Fountain Greek Orthodox Church in Martins Ferry, Ohio. In addition to her humanitarian involvement, Mrs. Nicolozakes was an avid businesswoman. In the 1970s, she was the owner and operator of a hair salon located on the western end of Wheeling Avenue in Cambridge. In the 1980s, she opened Wedding World, a bridal salon in Cambridge with a satellite location on Maple Avenue in Zanesville. In addition, she was a key employee at the former Cadillac Lounge in downtown Cambridge, which was owned by the family. In her spare time, she was passionate about pursuing art. She thoroughly enjoyed painting and was a member of the Eastern Ohio Art Guild. Her other hobbies included bridge, crafts, bowling and golf. Family members are quick to stress that her grandchildren were the absolute loves of her life. Mrs. Nicolozakes is preceded in death by her husband, Stanley Nicolozakes. She is survived by three sons, Basil of Cambridge, Dean (Tina) of Cambridge and James (Connie) of Cape Coral, Florida; grandchildren, Deanna Nicolozakes of Cleveland, John Nicolozakes of Cambridge, Hannah (Michael) Moore of Cambridge, Elena Nicolozakes and Demi Nicolozakes, both of Cape Coral, Florida, Stanley Nicolozakes and Alexa Nicolozakes, both of Cambridge; and great-grandson, Blake Moore of Cambridge. She is also survived by sisters, Effie Iwankowski of Sterling Heights, Michigan, Mary (John) Feotis of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Irene Karash of Sterling Heights, Michigan; and sisters-in-law, Judy Tukesbrey of Deerfield, Illinois, and Helen Vitakis of Seven Hills, Ohio. In addition, she leaves many loving nieces and nephews. Visitation will be at Bundy-Law Funeral Home on Thursday, May 24, 2018 from 4 to 8 pm. Her services will be held on Friday at 11 am also at Bundy-Law with Fathers Michael Ziebarth and John Loejos officiating. Entombment will follow in Northwood Cemetery.
