October 20, 1914 - December 4, 2018
Frances H. (Hartley) Mehaffey, devoted wife and mother, passed away peacefully at her home on December 4, 2018, at the age of 104 years, surrounded by her family. She was born October 20, 1914, in Cambridge, Ohio, to the late Charles E. and Amanda (Braniger) Hartley, and married John (J.O.) Mehaffey on June 3, 1937. Frances was the owner/operator of the Town & Country Beauty Salon, and still held a current beauty license. She started her career of “twisting hair” when she was 10 years old, by walking from house to house to style hair. She received the first beauty license issued by the board of Cosmetology, and was honored a few years ago as their longest active licensee. Frances started her first beauty shop in the back of her father’s wallpaper business, followed by her shop over the old Strand Theater. She later started a second beauty shop in Quaker City, and finally moved to the current location on Bob’s Run Road. Frances started the cafeteria at Pike School many years ago, and was active in many school functions. She and J.O. were very involved with the Cambridge Lions Club, and were instrumental in starting the Lions Minstrel. She was in charge of makeup, and sang in the chorus for many years. In addition to her parents, Frances was preceded in death by her husband, John O. Mehaffey, who passed away August 10, 1993; sister, Charlene Messerschmidt; brother, Ruskin Hartley, and daughter-in-law, Dixie Mehaffey. She is survived by daughter Margot A. “Peggy” (Hal) Ringer of Cambridge, sons Dr. John R. (T’wana) Mehaffey of Pataskala and Thomas W. Mehaffey of Cambridge; eight grandchildren, Douglas L.
