November 10, 1938 - January 18, 2021
Walter M. Chumney, 82, of Old Washington, passed away peacefully at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, Ohio on January 18, 2021, surrounded by his loving family. Walter was born in Dover on November 10, 1938, to the late Reader Ray and Lena Olga (Opplinger) Chumney. After graduating from Dover High School in 1956, he married his high school sweetheart Charlene (Aston) Chumney on February 2, 1958, at the Evangelical United Brethren Church in Winfield. During their almost 63 years of marriage, they were blessed with four children, five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. In 1961, Walter and Charlene moved to a farm outside of Lore City where they worked on the farm, loved, and raised their family for 30 years. While on the farm, he also served as the transportation mechanic for the East Guernsey School District. After moving from the farm, Walter continued his passion for farming and transportation by serving as the Superintendent of the Guernsey County Home and a driver for Southeastern Area Transit for several years. In 1994, Walter was elected as a Trustee for Wills Township, a position he held for several terms. In addition to serving as a Township Trustee, Walter donated countless hours of his time for community projects. He especially enjoyed assisting the East Guernsey School District and the Old Washington Volunteer Fire Department. His skill of welding will leave his mark on the community for many years to come. Walter and Charlene were also extremely active with the Old Washington United Methodist Church, not only as members, but as caretakers of the church until their recent retirement. He enjoyed his retirement spending time with his family and his loyal dogs Zoe and Shep. In addition to numerous friends, he will be deeply missed by his family, including his wife, Charlene, of the home, and children, Connie (Greg) Dunlap, of Cambridge, Bruce (Cynthia) Chumney, of Zanesville, and Andy (Jen) Chumney of Washington, PA; their grandchildren, Greg (Keleigh), Tim (Meghan), and Cassandra Chumney, Christian (Madison) Johnson, and Ava Chumney; and their great-grandchildren Rowan and Baylor. In addition to his parents, Walter was preceded in death by his sister, Charlene Chumney; his brothers Doyle and Gene Chumney; and his daughter, Denise Chumney. Services will be handled by Bundy-Law Funeral Home in Cambridge. Due to COVID-19, the family has requested that services and burial be private. However, the service will be recorded and available for public viewing at www.bundy-lawfuneralhome.com. In lieu of flowers, the family would request that donations be made to either the Old Washington Volunteer Fire Department or the Antrim Volunteer Fire Department.
