Betty Ruth Pethtel was born on December 26th, 1938 and she died at her home on October 9th, 2024. From the moment of her existence, she was a warrior. There were complications at her birth and the doctor didn't think he could save them both, but Betty survived. When she was a child she contracted scarlet fever, she lost hearing in one ear and it damaged her heart but she survived. When she married her late husband, James, they were very poor, but she went to college and ultimately achieved a masters degree in nursing, which she used to practice as an RN and to teach at Ohio University. She overcame many hardships in her life, whether it was physical, mental or socioeconomic and she did so with her unwavering faith in God. In all things, she gave credit to her Lord and Savior and was a devout Christian all her life. She was the strongest woman I ever have met in my life. She will be missed dearly. Betty was the matriarch of our family. She held us all together and so now we must do it alone to honor her.
Betty was preceded in death by her late husband, James Pethtel, who left the world 51 days ago to be with God on August 19th, 2024 and also her sister, Wilma Carlisle, her brother, Robert Phillips and her late great grandson, Joshua.
She is survived by her daughter, Christine Saum (Stephen), her sisters, Carol Wilson (Philip), and Helen Baker (Bill), her grandchildren, Amanda Masters (Mark), and Jessica Johnston (Robert), and her three great-grandchildren, Aaliyah Steed, Blake Steed and Reagan Johnston, as well as several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be at Bundy-Law Funeral Home on Monday, October 14, 2024 from 4 to 6 pm. Her funeral service will be on Tuesday, October 15, 2024 at 2 pm also at Bundy-Law with Rev.
