Calvin "Cal" Clifford Rice, age 91 of Cambridge, passed away on Wednesday, December 21, 2022 at Southeastern Ohio Regional Medical Center. He was born on May 29, 1931 in Flint, Michigan, a son of the late Herman Clifford Rice and Thelma Hazel (Bloomer) Rice.
Mr. Rice received his Bachelors of Arts Degree from Michigan State University, Masters Degree from U of Michigan and a Masters Degree from Garrett Theological School. Cal served in Ministry and pastored for over 22 years at several Methodist Churches in Michigan; pastored in Florida for 5 years and was a chaplain in Ohio for 12 years. He was an actor with the Black Hills Passion Play for 10 years and the Living Word Outdoor Drama for 15 years. He participated in drama ministry in several states for over 40 years, served on two mission trips to Haiti and also went on a Holy Land trip.
Cal was an active member or involved with: Guernsey County Right to Life; the Chordial Chorus; the Guernsey County United Methodist Men; Christ United Methodist Church; and a member of the Guernsey County Civil War Round Table. A Hospice of Guernsey volunteer, he was on the board for the Open Arms Pregnancy Center for many years, and helped with the Meals on Wheels program and Grace Pantry as well. He was a faithful blood doner having donated over 18 gallons. He enjoyed reading, acting, the Living Word Outdoor Drama, and Cambridge Performing Arts Center plays.
Surviving are: his wife of 22 years, Martha Elizabeth (Handy) Davis Rice, they were married on November 4, 2000; children, Randy (& Gail) Rice, Rick (& Sally) Rice, Dawn (& Alan) Sapp and Mary (& Kevin) Calderhead; foster daughter Ying, Oi Ping; step children, Amy (& Clifford) Brown, Barry (& Jennifer Beers) Davis and Adam (& Cassandra) Davis; grandchildren, Andrew, Michael, Joseph, Olivia, Abigail, Sarah Grace, Micah and Hannah Rose; step grandchildren, Sean, Emma and Maddox; a great-granddaughter Bailey; and the mother of daughter Mary, Joyce (Dawson) Rice.
Cal is preceded in death by: his parents; a brother Charles and sister-in-law Vivian Rice; and an infant sister Donna Jean; and his first wife Rosemary (Sawyer) Rice, mother of Randy, Rick and Dawn.
Visitation will be at Christ United Methodist Church on Wednesday, December 28, 2022 from 11 am to 1 pm with the service to begin at 1 pm. Pastor Steve Smith will officiate with burial following in Northwood Cemetery.
