John Raymond Tommy Thompson, age 87 of Cambridge, died Monday January 21, 2002 at the home of his daughter and son-in-law.
He was born August 17, 1914, in Cambridge, son of the late Clyde and Lucille Marling Thompson. He graduated from Brown High School in 1932 and Muskingum College in 1936. He spent 40 years of his life as an educator and coach in the Guernsey County School System 34 of those were in Cambridge City Schools. He coached football, basketball, baseball and track; taught Industrial Arts, Geography, History, Phys. Ed. and Social Studies; was Athletic Director and Dean of Students.
He retired from teaching in 1976 and had the C.H.S. yearbook dedicated in his honor that year. In 1977. He was inducted into the Ohio High School Athletic Directors' Assoc. Hall of Fame. He also received an Ohio High School Athletic Assoc. Outstanding Service Award.
He was widely known for his loyalty, hard work, fairness and discipline.
He was a 77 year member of the Ninth Street United Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife Thelma of 63 years Oct. 19, 2001 and his brother Robert - May 25, 1982.
He leaves one daughter, Mrs. Wayne Carol Fairchild of Cambridge, two granddaughters, Lisa Fairchild of Cambridge and Mrs. Philip Wendy Biddle of Zanesville; several nieces, nephews, and cousins and lots of friends and former students.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 P.M. Friday at Bundy-Law Funeral Home, Cambridge, where services will be at 11:00 A.M. Saturday with the Rev. Scott Low officiating Burial will be in Northwood Cemetery.
