Obituary

Mary Lou (Oliver) McCarty, age 82 of Cambridge, Ohio passed away peacefully on March 17, 2024, at StoryPoint Memory Care in Powell, Ohio. She was born on June 12, 1941, in Cambridge, Ohio. Mary Lou was a 1959 graduate of Cambridge High School where she was voted class clown for her fun-loving and silly personality. Her gift was making people laugh. Her close friends called her Lou, but her sisters nicknamed her Worm - we do not remember why. Mary Lou's profession was a secretary. She worked at RCA for 6 yrs, and was the RCA Hi-Fi Set club "Girl of the Year". She met the love of her life, Bob McCarty, at this time in her life. They married on her birthday, June 12, 1965. They were married 52 years. Her biggest joy was being a stay at home mom for 16 years as well as serving her church and community. Mary Lou was an active member of Christ Our Light Parish Catholic Church for 56 years. She served as Catholic Women's Club president, and she was a school board member for St. Benedict Catholic School, ( 6 years) serving as vice president and secretary. Mary Lou was also an active member of the Bereavement Haven ministry where she devoted her time to comfort others. She loved to pay it forward as she had the heart to serve any one in need. Mary Lou loved to sing old church hymns and remembered her favorites by heart until the end of her life. Her favorite song was How Great Thou Art. She was an active member of her high school and church choirs. Mary Lou rejoined the workforce in 1982 working at Medical Associates (3 years) and Park Elementary School (15 years). After retirement, Mary Lou enjoyed volunteer work at Grace Pantry and was on their board. She also volunteered as a reading aide at Park Elementary. After her husband Bob's stroke, Mary Lou was his full-time caregiver for 19 years until his death. She was honored with the "Caregiver of the Year" Award in Guernsey County. Mary Lou enjoyed Cambridge parades, performing arts, and concerts, Kennedy's Bakery for every family event, and custard pie from Theos. She was an avid supporter each year of the Dickens Victorian Village and all things Cambridge. She loved her hometown. Mary Lou is preceded in death by her husband Robert Francis McCarty, an infant son Mark Robert McCarty, her mother Rhea Oliver, 2 sisters, Joyce Gray and Marnelle Sneddon. Mary Lou is survived by a son, Patrick McCarty of Gahanna, Ohio, 2 daughters, Molly (Jim) Petrey of Paris, Kentucky, and Mary (Tom) Wiseman of Powell, Ohio. Mary Lou has 8 grandchildren: Jacob (Connor) Wiseman, Johnny Wiseman, Joseph Wiseman, Jack Wiseman, and James Wiseman, Benjamin Petrey and Madysan (Aaron) Poe, and Hailey McCarty. Mary Lou is survived by many nieces and nephews. She is a role model to us all when it comes to loyalty, commitment, and persevering through hard times. She will be deeply missed by all. Her cup was overflowing with so much love. We know her last breath on earth was her first breath in Heaven, as Jesus met her and said, Well done, good and faithful servant. We can only imagine the joy she experienced entering into His Presence. Calling hours will be Wednesday, March 20, from 2:00 to 4:00 & 6:00 to 8:00 at Bundy-Law Funeral Home. There will be a family eulogy service at 7:30 where personal memories will be shared to honor Mary Lou. On Thursday, March 21, friends and family may pay their respects from 12:00-1:00 at Christ Our Light Parish Church followed by a Celebration of Life mass at 1:00 PM with Father Paul Hrezo officiating. A Christian burial at Calvary Cemetery will immediately follow the Mass with a luncheon back at the church afterwards.
