Roger E. McManus

Roger E. Mc Manus, a lifelong Cambridge resident and well-known mechanic, died Sunday, January 10, 2010, at Cambridge Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was born in Cambridge on October 14, 1927, to the late Walter M. and Margaret E. Shuttleworth Mc Manus. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Evelyn Winnett Mc Manus, and his children: Karen Sue Duryl Mallett of Cambridge, Sandra Kay Ron Marshall of Pickerington, Jo Ellen Jeff Boyd of Cambridge, Roger W. MaryAnn of Westfield Center, and Robert E. Betty of Cambridge. He is also survived by his eleven grandchildren: Rich Shannon Hopkins, Amy Jody Singler, Chad Liz Marshall, Allison Steve Scott, Maggie Will LaPlante, Erin Boyd, Lorraine Kevin Meek, Ryan Kristin Mc Manus, Karrie Brad Bickford, Denise Steve Watson, and Lori Glen Long, and his 20 great-grandchildren: Isaac, Sydney, Braden, and Colson Hopkins, Dylan, Aidan, and Carys Singler, Andrew and Madeline LaPlante, Jillian and Adrienne Meek, Owen Arters, Tessa, Zoe, and Charlee Bickford, Stephen, Alexis, and Hunter Watson, Emily and Jessica Long. He especially enjoyed holidays with his grand and great-grand children. This Christmas was special with the birth of his 20th great-grandchild on Christmas Day. He will be remembered by his family as a wonderful, loving, and fun husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, and his death will leave a void in all of their lives. He will also be missed by family pets Rufus, Gracie, Ben, Harley, and Molly. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his in-laws, Lawrence G. and Edna L. Moffatt Winnett, and three brothers, Robert, Hugh, and Joseph. He is survived by two sisters, Betty Cooper, and Mary Alice Lerner, and one brother, Jack Mc Manus. He is also survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Wilmer L. PeeWee and Bonnie J. Winnett, and many nieces and nephews. Roger was Catholic, and as a young man, attended St. Benedict School and Church. Roger spent over 50 years as a mechanic, beginning at Red Sweet's Garage when he was still a teenager. He went on to work for 32 years at Cambridge Motor and Storage, and finished his career at C & L Service Center, and Classic Ford. Although Roger was a Ford man through and through, he was known as the man to go to if a person had any car problem. If he couldn't fix it, it couldn't be fixed. Roger had many interests, beginning with auto racing. He was a mechanic for several local dirt track teams in the 50's and 60's. He helped to create the local go-cart club in the 60's. He attended the Indy 500 for 60 years, went to over 100 Nascar races, and spent the last few years watching his grandson, Ryan, participate in SCCA. He was a bowler for over 40 years, and especially enjoyed bowling with his son, Bob, in the Elks League. Through the years, he attended his children's, grandchildren's, and great-grandchildren's sporting events. Although he had always liked football, basketball and baseball, through his grandchildren's participation, he learned to also enjoy golf and soccer. With his family and friends, he enjoyed camping, boating, and water-skiing. He and Evelyn loved traveling with their camping trailer, and wintering in Florida. He was an avid Buckeyes and Bobcats fan. He loved attending Bobcat basketball games. He was a member of the local Elks Club for over 30 years. Visitation will be on Wednesday, January 13, 2010 from 4 to 8 pm at Bundy-Law Funeral Home. The service will be on Thursday, January 14, 2010 at 11:00 am. Rev. Father Robert Borer will officiate the service with burial following in Northwood Cemetery.
