Our History
Walter R. Bundy: A Legacy of Service
Walter R. Bundy was the proud founder of what is today Bundy-Law Funeral Home. He was born in Ohio around 1890 and dedicated his life to caring for his neighbors in Cambridge and Guernsey County.
Founding a Community Institution
In 1924, Walter Bundy opened his funeral home in Cambridge. In those early days, funeral directors did much more than handle burials. Walter also operated a crucial emergency ambulance service out of the home. He spent his days and nights answering emergency medical calls, helping local families during their most terrifying moments. Walter built the business on a strong foundation of trust, dignity, and deep compassion. He operated the firm as the sole owner for thirty years.
Leadership & Community Life
Walter was not just a funeral director. He was a highly respected leader in Cambridge. Walter was a prominent member of the local Masonic community. He reached the prestigious 33rd Degree in Masonry. He served as a district lecturer and as the Commander in Chief of the Guernsey Consistory. He was an active part of local civic groups, helping to shape and support the town of Cambridge as it grew.
Family and Resilience
Walter shared his life with his wife, Mary Bundy. The couple lived upstairs of the funeral home. In August 1934, Walter and Mary faced a terrible tragedy when a gasoline accident caused an explosion in the basement. Mary sadly passed away from her injuries. Despite this deep personal grief, Walter continued to pour his heart into comforting other mourning families in the community.
Passing the Torch
In 1954, as Walter grew older, he welcomed Milton O. Law into the business. Walter mentored Milton and shared his values of kindness and integrity. This partnership ensured that the funeral home would keep its small-town, family-first feel for generations to come. Walter Bundy’s name still stands on our building today as a promise of the high-quality care he started a century ago.
Milton O. Law: A Century of Care
Milton O. Law was a vital leader who helped shape the legacy of Bundy-Law Funeral Home. For over 50 years, he served the families of Cambridge, Ohio, with immense compassion, professionalism, and quiet dignity.
Joining the Firm
In 1954, Milton arrived at the funeral home as a fully licensed embalmer and funeral director. He worked closely alongside the original founder, Walter R. Bundy. Milton quickly learned the unique needs of Guernsey County families. He took over the daily emergency ambulance services and the delicate work of managing funeral arrangements.
Ownership and Partnership
In 1968, Milton officially purchased the firm from Walter Bundy. Under his leadership, the business became a true family operation. Milton ran the day-to-day work alongside his beloved wife, Annajean Law. Together, they upgraded the facilities and maintained a warm, supportive atmosphere for everyone who walked through the doors.
In 1970, Bundy-Law and four other local funeral homes signed a historic pact. They officially handed their ambulance operations over to the independent Byrd Ambulance Company. This allowed the staff to focus 100% on funeral care and family support.
Community and Family Legacy
Milton was deeply integrated into the fabric of Cambridge life, raising his family in the community he served.
Passing the Torch
In 1987, Milton welcomed his son, James M. Law, into the family business. Milton mentored Jim just as Walter Bundy had once mentored him, ensuring that the funeral home’s core value of treating neighbors like family survived for another generation.
A Lasting Name
Milton’s dedication is the reason the name “Law” stands proudly on the front of our building today. His high standard of personal care remains the guiding light for our staff every single day.
James M. Law: A Lifetime of Community Care
James “Jim” M. Law, born and raised right here in Cambridge, Ohio, Jim represents another generation of care at our firm. He has spent his entire career carrying on his family’s tradition of service with integrity, and deep compassion.
Growing up in the family business, Jim learned early on what it meant to support neighbors through their toughest days. He dedicated his education to mastering his craft. When he graduated in 1987 from the prestigious Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science, Jim officially joined his parents, Milton O. and Annajean Law, in running the day-to-day operations of the funeral home. Jim and his wife, Jennifer Law, later took over ownership and local management of the firm. Together, they guided local families through their times of grief with the same personalized, courteous care that the Cambridge community has trusted since 1924.
Civic Leadership and Community Life
Jim’s dedication to Cambridge stretches far beyond the doors of the funeral home. He was an active leader in many local civic groups and fraternal organizations that make our town a better place to live: a member of the First United Methodist Church, Guernsey Lodge #66 F & AM, the Scottish Rite Valley of Cambridge, the Aladdin Temple Shrine of Columbus, and the Kambri Shrine of Cambridge. the Cambridge Kiwanis Club and the Cambridge Elks Lodge just to name a few. Jim’s lifelong connection to Guernsey County ensured that every family we serve is treated like a true neighbor.
In 2002, a door was opened with a phone call. Jacob B. “Jake” Koch from Freeport inquired about a job. He graduated from Cincinnati College of Mortuary College in 2000 as a licensed funeral director and embalmer. He served his apprenticeship and worked at Smith Funeral Home in Sugarcreek after graduation. Jacob was a great fit for our firm and has turned out to be a blessing for our community. He has been a vital part of operations since his hiring. Funeral service was part of his upbringing; he grew up in a family-owned small town funeral home. He brought decades of deep knowledge and heart to our team. He and his family continue to carry on the dedicated, loyal services and treat everyone like family.
Handing off the torch
Jacob B. Koch and wife Amanda purchased the funeral home from James and Jennifer Law in January of 2026. Today, the Koch’s serve as the owners and operators. Under their care, they continue to offer personalized traditional burials, cremations, and custom memorials.
